29-Oct-2009 Forum to collect public views on Review of Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance The Government has published the "Consultation Document on Review of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance". To widely consult the public on the suggestions in the document, the Government will hold a public forum on October 30 from 7pm to 9pm, at the Cultural Activities Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, 72 Tai Ho Road, Tsuen Wan, New Territories, Hong Kong.
27-Oct-2009 Customs cracks online sale of infringing computer software Hong Kong Customs arrested an 18-year-old man suspected of selling infringing computer software products on the Internet on October 26. The department urged young people to respect intellectual property rights and not engage in any kind of infringing activities, including those involving the use of Internet.

The website looks similar to the official website of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia) Limited ("ICBC (Asia)"). ICBC (Asia) has clarified that it has no connection with the fraudulent website.

28-Aug-2009 Website: http://www.foreignfinancial-hk.com The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) wishes to alert members of the public in Hong Kong to a website with the domain name "www.foreignfinancial-hk.com". The website is operated by an entity calling itself "Hong Kong Foreign Financial Fund Company". The website appears to give the impression that the entity is connected to the Exchange Fund. The HKMA wishes to clarify that neither it nor the Exchange Fund has any connection with the website, nor any connection with or knowledge of "Hong Kong Foreign Financial Fund Company". The HKMA has already reported the case to the Hong Kong Police Force for investigation.
12-Aug-2009 HKPC Warns Against Rising Cyber Threats Information security experts warned local internet users against the threat from "botnet", a collection of personal computers being hijacked to launch cyber attacks, at the "Information Security Showcase 2009" organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council on 12 August 2009 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
11-Aug-2009 Fraudulent email purporting to be related to Bank of China (HK) Limited The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has alerted people in Hong Kong to an email purporting to be sent from the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. The email requests customers to use an embedded hyperlink to connect to a fraudulent website ("accessboc.pcriot.com") and verify their account information by entering their Internet banking account’s user name and password.

4-Aug-2009 Privacy Commissioner Welcomes Hospital Authority's New Measures on the Protection of Patients' Personal Data Last year, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data ("the Commissioner") Mr. Roderick B. Woo recommended to the Hospital Authority ("HA") to use unique identifiers and not Hong Kong identity card numbers for purposes other than (a) identity authentication of patients and (b) the prescription of drugs so as to minimize the risk of leaking patients’ data caused by human errors. The Commissioner is pleased that the HA has begun to implement his recommendation.

25-Jun-2009 Customs detects first case of infringing online game servers Hong Kong Customs has detected a copyright infringement case, the first of its kind, which was using infringing online game servers. During the operation, a 34-year-old man was arrested with seven Internet servers and five computers seized from a residential premises in Tung Chung. The total value of the computer equipment seized is about $77,000.

15-Jun-2009 Customs uncovers "top-site" piracy case Hong Kong Customs has uncovered a case involving an international piracy syndicate that uses high-speed Internet servers (generally called "top-site") to distribute copyright-infringing items, including movies, music, computer programmes and videogame software. With the arrest of two men, it is believed that Customs has successfully smashed the syndicate’s setup in Hong Kong for distributing pirated items and seized all the related computer equipment used by the syndicate here.

17-Feb-2009 Fraudulent email purporting to be related to the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited The Hong Kong Monetary Authority wishes to alert members of the public in Hong Kong to emails purporting to be sent from the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited. The emails invite customers to use an embedded hyperlink to connect to a fraudulent website, where a malicious programme is embedded. The fraudulent website looks similar to HSBC's Business Internet Banking logon webpage. HSBC has issued a press release on February 17 to clarify that the bank has not sent these emails to its customers and has no connection with the fraudulent website.
